David J. Smith has held senior roles with a global reach in technology, networking, and cybersecurity over the past thirty years. He has developed telecom infrastructure for data, wireless communications, and smartphone technologies, and has created strategies for connected and autonomous vehicles. David holds both an MASc and a BASc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, and a Chartered Director (C.Dir) designation from McMaster University and the Conference Board of Canada.
Since January 2018, David has been the Chief Technology Officer for ORION, Ontario’s Research and Education Network, and has made it his mission to address the strategic and tactical approaches to secure Canada’s higher education sector. He is responsible for ORION’s cybersecurity team and is a leader in Ontario’s Cybersecurity Higher Education Consortium (ON-CHEC.) David is a member of CANARIE’s Cybersecurity Advisory Committee, and serves as chair of their Cybersecurity Initiatives Deployment Committee. He partners with other members of Canada’s higher education sector in Canadian Shared Security Operations Centre (CANSSOC) initiatives.
